Vintage Classics Apparel X Tracksharks Collaboration Jesse Owens Tee

Jesse Owens (James Cleveland Owens) was an American track and field athlete, born on September 12, 1913, in Oakville, Alabama, and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Owens is best known for his remarkable achievements at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he won four gold medal in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100-meter relay. His victories were particularly significant as they shattered Adolf Hitler’s myth of Aryan racial superiority on a global stage.

Owens' athletic talent was evident from a young age, and he first gained national attention while competing for Ohio State University, where he set multiple world records in a single day during the 1935 Big Ten Championships, an event known as "the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport."

Despite his success at the Olympics, Owens faced racism and segregation in the United States, and struggled to find financial stability after his athletic career ended. He worked various jobs, including as a gas station attendant and running a dry cleaning business, but his post-athletic career never matched his fame as an athlete.

Owens was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, recognizing his contributions to sports and civil rights. He died of lung cancer on March 31, 1980, in Tucson, Arizona, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest and most influential athletes in history.
